More good news is that I told Jerk to take a hike. The bad news is that he took the opportunity to wipe his hard drive clean, uninstalled programs and even erased his e-mail identity. But does he still get paid his two weeks: Oh, yes he does.

Since we backup our e-mail on the server nightly, I was able to retrieve his e-mail. Here are some choice snippets:

From jerk to his former boss:
"So long as they can pay me enough, I’d take it in a flash. It’s gotten pretty unbearable over here. XXXXX has reverted back to her old ways, I don’t even speak to her anymore. Should I leave, I may go in and talk to XXXXX, in defense of the unlucky bastid who replaces me."

From jerk again to another colleague within my office:
"The point is, she's trying not to hire someone who is better than her."

He also called me insecure and untalented and that the publication is a "shit storm."

It's pretty interesting that someone who worked for me for less two months (and three weeks of those two months were the vacation time) had these strong opinions about me. I let him take a ton of time off, he came in late, left early and basically got to do whatever he wanted, and he still hated me. And his former boss barely even knows me — very strange.

I know none of this stuff relates to fashion or being petite but here is the one thing that does about this whole mess. When I heard Jerk deleting stuff on his computer, I asked him to stop and leave, but he refused to listen. So I went to the VP of my company and asked him for back up. The VP told me to take a deep breath, calm down and to give Jerk some more time to finish up. Well, by the time he finished up proprietary company information was gone. Was I brushed aside because I am a woman? Possibly, but something else came up in that exchange that was quite interesting. The VP said he had forgotten how young Jerk was because he is so tall and you think he is older than he is.

So a tall person equals older? That equates to giving a substantial raise that wasn't deserved? And because I am shorter that meant I didn't deserve the same amount of money when I was in that role? Isn't that discrimination?

That aside here are the facts: this kid and his former boss lost the company more than $1 million. They were the team on a newly launched publication that never got off the ground. It folded and that is why I inherited him. Its interesting that this kid and his former boss don't seem to find fault in their contributions to this loss. I've been running a fairly successful (we are still in publication) book for five years now.

A co-worker of mine from another department sent me this e-mail:
"All I can say is, XXXXX is going to have some seriously bad employment karma
at some point in his life."

One can only hope.

Hello again

So, as work has continued to be super stressful, my shopping has increased. I nabbed two new boatneck tees from J.Crew during their Extra 30 percent off sale; a black trench dress from BR (below) <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/SK2pkouHTwI/AAAAAAAAAOI/YYFOzusBCxs/s320/BR+dress.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237028388572974850" /> two v-neck sweaters, a floral tee and a khaki skirt from BR; a new pair of AG jeans; and a pair of petite linen pants and a cute sweatshirt from J.Crew today. Jeez ... typing it all out makes it sound like a heck of a lot more. Yikes!

Yesterday, the new member of my team (who got the job after we laid off another worker. The new guy was deemed "more valuable" by the powers that be than the previous guy) gave his notice yesterday. I'm not surprised (anyone who takes 13 days of vacation in a new position is bound to be out the door) but here's how it went down:

He had a really bad attitude about working a full day (8 hours) and completing his job tasks so yesterday I sat him down and said something along the lines of "I'm concerned. You don't seem to be very engaged in your role here." Then he said he was expecting a job offer to come through that very day and if the offer was right he was going to give his notice. And he said that the fact that this offer was coming right at the same time his girlfriend was moving to New York and this job is going to be in that area, was just a coincidence. Yep, and I'm Angelina Jolie.

Why do people have to lie? I understand the approach to leave your job on your own terms. But letting a company lay someone else off so you can keep a paycheck for two months is something awful. How do you sleep at night?

I was glad though to hear he was on his way out, even if he did tell me that he plans on taking Friday and Monday off again! it'll clear the way for me to bring in someone who really wants to be here and learn — I'm actually looking for a little mini-me.

So, now the search is on. And hopefully, for my bank account, I'll find someone fabulous who will make my life easier and subsequently, make me cut down on the retail therapy.

Back in black, literally

I returned from Arizona, tanned and relaxed with a few additional items in my suitcase. Most notably two new shirts from Banana, a new bra and a pair of panties from Victoria's, and a bunch of new cosmetics from Sephora (including a new bottle of Prada perfume. It's so fabulous!)

The heat in Arizona definitely made me (and everyone else) flock to the mall. I found the cutest dress at BCBG, which may very well be my new favorite store, but didn't buy it. Totally regretting it. I was also going to buy a new Coach purse, but the store was definitely lacking in classic yet fashion forward designs. Louis Vuitton's Speedy 25 was calling out my name from the LV store, but I couldn't justify the $550 cost, especially after losing $150 at the casino.

Arizona — Phoenix especially — was a ghost town with the 108 degree heat blazing. No one walked the streets, no one jogged, no one visited the outside shopping centers. I could barely find a place to eat that was open — right in downtown! Isn't this one of the largest cities in the U.S.?

I will say the desert is beautiful. I was out in Fountain Hills — home of the world's largest manmade geyser — right outside Scottsdale. No one bothered me at the pool, where I felt like a kid again doing underwater somersaults and the place was very quiet.

I found a local yoga studio — At One Yoga — and tried out a few classes there. All the instructors teach to music, which I found a bit challenging since it was hard to focus on your breath. But it was challenging nonetheless — my studio at home is heated to 100 degrees for the power vinyasa style I study and this studio was heated to 85 degrees. I was sweating the same regardless of the temperature difference, so the degrees were made up with cardio points.

So I came back home late Wednesday evening and was back at work promptly at 9:15 am the next morning. I bet a colleague of mine that my zen mood would last two hours. In reality, I made it to 2 1/2 hours. If anyone is looking to hire a motivated petite and fashion-loving editor looking to escape from a badly managed company, send me an e-mail.

I know, just spank me

Yes, I haven't posted in two months. It's shameful! I really want to take time out of my day to tell you all what I've been doing and more importantly, what I've been buying, but it's been a crazy summer. Not because I have taken any time off or been sipping on pina coladas, but because work has sucked. Here's a sampling:

*I had to lay off one of my staff members because of a company reorganization.
*I then had to hire someone from another department and train them.
*I had to buy a new car (Not really a bad thing. Just time consuming. Love my new Volvo.)
*I had to program the educational portion of a conference my company is putting on.
*Needed to stress out about conference we are putting on because only two people have signed up yet and its less than three months away.
*The keynote speaker for said conference has been called a "fraud" by some participants.
*I fear I may get fired.
*I've been looking for another job.
*I've been working my tail off and I am paid much less than the men in the office.
*I haven't been shopping as much as I normally do. (Partially due to the new Volvo.)
*I had to go to "hot as hell" Orlando.

I think that about sums it up. My focus on fashion has just not been there lately. I haven't even been excited about Banana's summer line. Or its fall preview. Or the fact that they are offering some of the monogram pieces in petite.

With all of this in mind, I am taking a much needed break. I'm off to Arizona on Saturday for some sun, yoga, relaxation, golf and cocktails. I hoping to return back to old form, with lots of fashion excitement to share.

But we'll see.

Summer is here

Ok, since I deal with business news in my day-to-day job, I have this undying compulsion to read People magazine on a daily basis (Pathetic, I know!) My apologies. But I have definitely found time to get some shopping in. Unfortunately, my birthday trip to Miami is off but I plan on visited the spa this weekend instead and possibly do some more shopping. Here are a rundown of some new purchases:
I got these capris from J.Crew in the papaya color below. I wanted the grey mist color but they weren't shipping for another week to to a drop in inventory.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/SDLj0cQv1mI/AAAAAAAAAOA/tsOpGSMfR2I/s320/jcrew+crop+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202471009645483618" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/SDLjscQv1lI/AAAAAAAAAN4/P5wD9BM7R5M/s320/jcrew+crop.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202470872206530130" />

I love J.Crew's 3/4 sleeve boatneck tees. I picked this one up in black. Black is always great for a plane ride.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/SDLjF8Qv1jI/AAAAAAAAANo/5wvYlJAX04g/s320/jcrew+boatneck.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202470210781566514" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/SDLjj8Qv1kI/AAAAAAAAANw/9z_Ydhjye_Q/s320/jcrew+btnck+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202470726177642050" />

There are two things about J.Crew that bug me. Ok, maybe three. First — their shipping charges are outrageous and they rarely offer a free shipping code (they even asked that their codes be taken off the Retail Me Not forum.) But I will say their regular shipping arrives much quicker than Banana's. I'm hoping these items come by Friday — to be continued.
Second — their petite line is built so that us petites have to order a size up from our normal size. I know it's only a number, but it still gets to me!
Third — Their prices are high, period. But the quality is definitely up there so I guess it balances out.

I also recently picked up this dress from Banana. It is so fun to wear. I've been wearing it with a black or white tank underneath to dress it down a bit and it is super cute both ways. Perfect for a good dinner out.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/SDLi9MQv1iI/AAAAAAAAANg/CPXS2xZkp4g/s320/BR+dress.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202470060457711138" />

Happy brithday

My birthday is this month and even though it is still a few weeks away, the gifts are coming in already. Well, not really gifts but birthday coupons for some of my favorite retailers.

*Sephora is giving me a 2.5 oz helping of Sephora Vanilla Cupcake Bath & Shower Bubbles. Sounds yummy! On a side note, I LOVE Sephora — the best place for beauty and if you haven't yet tried LipFusion, Smashbox O-Glow, DiorShow mascara or Nars blush in orgasm, get on that right now.

*Victoria's Secret's annual $10 birthday gift certificate came in mail last week. I plan on putting it towards a few new undergarments tonight. I head out to California, again, tomorrow (this is the month of me half-living in the O.C.), what better excuse is there is buy some new goodies.

*DSW sent over a $5 off coupon on a purchase of $19.95 or more.

*And even though BR didn't send me this for my birthday, a friend gave me a $25 gift card. I think if anyone, BR should send me a pretty nice birthday reward, I spend enough with them for sure.

So, if you're birthday is coming up you might want to sign up for these stores' e-mail lists or join their forums. If you can stand the constant e-mails, the rewards are worth it.

It may be warm, but please ... dress your age.

I know summer and warm temps are just around the corner (it's even warming up here in New England!) and I am ready to break out the warm weather gear. But I have to voice my opinion about one thing: Short shorts.

I know short shorts are supposed to be elongating on us petite girls, but you also have to think about class and age appropriateness. I hate to be a bummer, but I don't think short shorts are made for women past the age of 32, no matter how fabulous your legs are. My friends and I even agree on this (a first) because you can elongate yourself all you want but if you look like a cheap, whore doing so, you haven't accomplished anything.

I won't buy anything shorter than a 4-inch inseam anymore and I will only have one pair of those (the BR shorts below). Bermudas and capris are just as cute, and a heck of a lot more classy than 2-inch inseam, low-rise shorts that leave NOTHING to the imagination.

There's something to be said about picturing yourself at a summer party in the Hamptons with George Clooney before heading out the door. Yoga and running are my top two hobbies. It has been so cold up here in New England this winter that running outside hasn't been a possibility. But this week is has warmed up, and me and my Siberian Husky have run outside twice this week. First time, 3 miles and tonight we completed 3.25. I can't tell you how exhilarating it is to run outside after being stuck on a treadmill at the gym all winter.

I am so glad to be able to get outside, especially after a long day at work like today. And to give you your fashion hook, I will tell you I washed the Lucy yoga pants and they did shrink so I will not have to visit the tailor to hem them after all. But I have to admit, not sure if I was the biggest fashionista on Back Bay today as I topped off those cute pants with a Nike San Francisco Half-Marathon T-shirt. Hey, if you completed it (even in a very slow time) you have to brag.

Anyway, here's the view I had this evening during our run:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/SAVOFjnaWjI/AAAAAAAAAMA/QqZLRVO54kc/s320/back-cove-9-02-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5189640002981222962" />

Follow-up on exercise gear

I told you I'd follow up on the Lucy yoga pants I purchased a few weeks back. They didn't arrive until after I got back from Vegas, which is part of the reason I have yet to claim my opinion.

They are made well, are a great comfortable material, BUT are still too long. I am perplexed by this. A 28-inch inseam is the shortest I go with pants — with jeans and other pants I wear a 29-inch.

I put them on after yoga the other day and they were about an-inch too long. I hadn't washed them yet so threw them in there and hope some shrinkage occurred. If not, off to the tailors. Uggghhh ...

Here's my question to you all: Why are low-rise pants always longer than regular-rise pairs? I have always found that if both say they have a 28-inch inseam, the regular rise fits fine, but the low rise is always too long. Can anyone fill me in on the reason?

Notes from Ohio

Two words: Ohio sucks.

I'm sure if you live there is a perfectly fantastic place, but as a visitor, on business no less, it really didn't have much to offer besides chain restaurants, chain hotels and chain stores.

I miss Vegas.

Back home

Sorry about the delay in posting. Between the busy-ness of the conference, social outings, my relaxing extra day in Vegas, traveling home and getting back into the swing of things at work, I've been straight out. Now, I'm finally back on Eastern time (somewhat) and obviously want to catch you up on what's been going on.

Although my first shopping trip was a disaster, Saturday's was fantastic. I got two new dresses from BR at the Canal Shops in the Venetian. (I worked hard to spend the couple hundred bucks I won gambling!) Here's the pic of my favorite — perfect for an upcoming trip I have to San Francisco.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R_z44vKZz7I/AAAAAAAAAL4/bj9rhLafN5U/s320/BR+dress.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187294524440432562" />

I also went to one of my favorite restaurants — Alize at the top of the Palms — on Saturday night, which was fantastic. I had a hot stone massage at the Venetian, fabulous again. I came home, fairly relaxed, until I got back to work.

I head out to Ohio tomorrow, I'm positive I will not have as much fun there.

Early morning thoughts from Vegas

So, I made it here in one piece without accosting any badly dressed travelers and so far things are going well. Since I don't have to present at this conference, I'm able to slow down my pace a bit, which is definitely the exception. And I can honestly say that I have not been hungover ... yet.

I got in Tuesday and immediately headed over to The Forum Shops. My trip to BR was VERY disappointing. They only had ONE petite dress style for me to try on. Such a bummer and it really didn't fit the bill that I was looking for. I did get a cute skirt, but didn't spend a quarter of the money I had expected to! I headed over to Ann Taylor and purchased a dress — I can't find a pic of it — but I might return it. So not a great shopping trip.

It seems as though times are booming for short girls. A co-worker's buddy said he prefers shorter women. And last night at Tao, I went up to the bar to order a drink and the bartender said "I LOVE short girls!" It was hilarious.

More reports from Vegas to come!

Come on America. Step it up!

I have a lot of pet peeves about airline travel — and it has nothing to do with the delays, baggage mishandling, cancellations, etc. that I have become accustomed to. It has to do with how people (passengers) dress when they are on an airplane. It really is a disgrace.

I've been told stories about how people used to get dressed up for air travel. It was a luxury and people treated it as such. Of course, back then they served steak that wasn't freeze dried.

It seems as though many passengers are dressing in response to the lack of service/amenities on airplanes today. Most people I see are wearing sweats (just because it is Juicy Couture does NOT make it right). I actually saw a woman wearing a Nike track suit this morning — it's like it has become the official uniform of air travelers.

Well, let me tell you something. There is NO WAY IN HELL you are going to get upgraded if you dress like a slob. Leave the neck pillow at home. You can wear jeans, but wear jeans as though it were casual Friday at work. I always wear dark denim with a black shirt (either a turtleneck or a cardigan usually, depending on the destination) with black heels. And I wear my fabulous cream-colored BR trench when I travel — no matter what the temperature — because it just looks fabulous.

Tim Gunn has a great chapter in his book about how to dress when traveling by plane. It's a good read if you haven't checked it out yet.

You never know who is going to be sitting next to you — could be someone who could offer you a job or it could be Patrick Dempsey. Be prepared and fashionable.

Remember: Good clothes open all doors.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://viewsofapetitegirl.blogspot.com/2008/04/come-on-america-step-it-up.html' title='Come on America. It's an opportunity to shop (see post below), gamble (love to, even though I really shouldn't throw money away), eat great food at some of the most fabulous restaurants (Social House, Tao, Alize) and drink fantastic cocktails (Social House makes the BEST vodka green tea concoction). It really is about being overindulgent, but since most of my life is filled with restraint — working out, watching what I eat, and being thrifty and responsible — this is a great time to let loose. I'm even staying an extra day to lounge by the pool at The Venetian.

Speaking of restraint, do any of you fellow petite girls out there feel that you have to watch every little thing you eat? Let's be honest, an extra five pounds on a 5 foot tall girl looks like 10 extra pounds. I always feel restrained when it comes to food and I know most women do, but I feel as though it is tougher for us. One of the reasons I love it besides its huge array of brands — Louis Vuitton, Anthropologie, Coach, Kate Spade, Lucky jeans, Tiffany & Co. to name a few — is that I can buy off-the-rack in the petite section at the Banana Republic store without having to drive two hours (like I have to wear I live to get to a BR store that carries petites.) Here are the dresses I am eagerly looking to try on:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R-qLtqONLdI/AAAAAAAAAKw/1_CLAMAQnAo/s320/Br+b%26W.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182107937787424210" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R-qMEaONLiI/AAAAAAAAALY/aAzExYJFdDQ/s320/BR+paisley.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182108328629448226" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R-qMAKONLhI/AAAAAAAAALQ/wq1-XEbk9SI/s320/BR+green.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182108255615004178" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R-qL8KONLgI/AAAAAAAAALI/ntqt8TY7gJM/s320/Br+dress.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182108186895527426" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R-qL36ONLfI/AAAAAAAAALA/IBKX2BJp0k4/s320/BR+bw.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182108113881083378" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R-qL0KONLeI/AAAAAAAAAK4/YlcIfC42wIk/s320/BR+black.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182108049456573922" />

Random thoughts and yoga pants

As I mentioned before I am a runner. Last year, I ran two half-marathons along with some other races and this year I may decide (emphasis on MAY) to go for a full — 26.2 miles. I want to say that this in no way means I am a fast or efficient runner — I am short (obviously) — it just means I am a glutton for pain and punishment.

But I hurt my back last week so I figured it was time to get back into yoga. It's been awhile since I practiced and it showed. Let me just say, an hour and one-half later I was EXHAUSTED. And, I realized maybe I should get my butt in gear and get back into this. The problem — I need some new yoga pants.

I've addressed the topic of petite activewear before — it's the reason I started this blog — because there is a lack of choices for petites. I directed you guys to Fit Couture before (they have 29-inch inseams) but I really need a 28.

Well, I found it at Lucy.com this weekend. It's low-rise pant and it was pricey but Retailmenot.com had a coupon code that worked for 30 percent off.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R-eroKONLbI/AAAAAAAAAKg/LGnlrKpL0CI/s320/lucy+studio+pant.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5181298602740100530" />

Here is the company's inseam chart, which I think is great. I don't go to the movie theater so this is a big deal. May can't come soon enough! Here's a sneak peek:

I read yesterday that Maxim magazine named Sarah Jessica Parker the unsexiest woman in the world last year and she revealed this week that the 'honor' really hurt her feelings. (I'm with her, it would hurt mine too!)

I think SJP is stylish, classy and beautiful — I don't agree with Maxim's take at all. I would list who I think should be on the list, but I don't want to be mean (Clinton, Goldberg, Spears possibly?)

But I wonder if one of the reasons Maxim voted her least sexy was because of her height (she is between 5'3" and 5'4".) Faced with growing losses, the company announced this week that it would close 150 stores, including 100 of its Fashion Bug locations and its Petite Sophisticate concept.

Charming Shoppes posted a loss of $127.6 million for the fourth quarter as sales fell, compared with net income of $24.9 million a year earlier. Sales for the three months ended Feb. 2 fell 10 percent
According to the Charming Shoppes web site, it operates 44 Petite Sophisticate outlet stores in 23 states and in October 2007, it opened its first Petite Sophisticate full-line store in Arlington, Texas. It also has an online web site.

I'm not sure if the web site will be shut down as well but I would assume as much.

I've never been a big fan of their clothes, but I known many petite women out there are loyalists. What I have noticed is that 'petite' can mean a host of things but I think the biggest thing we 'petites' face is this question — does petite mean short, thin or both?

The Free Online Dictionary defines petite as small, slender, and trim. Used of a girl or woman (when used as an adjective for all you grammar junkies out there!) Or a clothing size for short slender women (for use as a noun.)

This definition (found here) says in fashion and clothing, petite sizes are standard clothing sizes designed to fit women of shorter height, typically 5'3" or less. According to the U.S. Census, 60% of American women are under 5’5” and I would think that this means many of these fall into the petite category. (that's surprising considering the lack of space that is dedicated to us in stores.)

So, I think we can all agree that Nicole Richie is petite (5'1").

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R90sbEvreaI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/-MnQJnv6OXQ/s320/Nicole_Richie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5178343990187751842" />
But what about Jennifer Love Hewitt (5'2")— is she petite? (I am in no way saying that this girl is fat, but she is a few sizes bigger than Nicole.)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R90snEvrebI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/g42NWlCIws8/s320/jennifer+love+hewitt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5178344196346182066" />
So, you guys tell me. I was out at a conference in the Midwest last week and here are the things I still can't believe I saw:

*Cowboy boots with a long skirt and a sweater instead of a traditional suit. Hey, I'm all about switching the suit up for something else — a beautiful wrap dress possibly? (see post below) — but there is no need to look like you just walked off the farm.

*A jean suit with crystal embellishments. I am not kidding. A woman wore this to a meeting (see was the wife of one of the gentleman at the conference so we can give her a bit of a break. A bit ...) I have a photo of her on my cell phone and don't have the heart to post it. She also had really big hair. Yikes!

*Your BlueTooth is NOT an accessory.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R9cp2kvreSI/AAAAAAAAAIM/Kj98d4vGil0/s320/woman+bluetooth.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176652314239007010" />

I can't tell you how many women I saw last week that have embraced this very very bad habit. If you are not on the phone, take the damn thing off your ear. And if you're not driving or operating some other kind of heavy machinery, why don't you just use the handset? Please, people!

*Sneakers with a skirt. That were never removed. Enough said.

All around it was just a nightmare of bad fashion. One woman, whose outfits scared the crap out of me, ran up to me on the second day and told me how cute and well put together I was. I had to hold back from saying, "If you put some effort in, you could look like this too."

I'm going to be in Las Vegas for another trip in two weeks. I'll make sure to bring my camera this time. I'll be on the watch for good and bad petite fashions.

One size does NOT fit all

Hey all. It's been awhile since I posted, sorry! Work and life in general has been hectic. But I had to tell you about the deal I got this weekend and fill you in on some of my recent shopping trips.

Anyway, this past winter I had big plans to attend a swanky new years party and wear this fabulous dress I saw on BR's web site:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R9bgCkvreQI/AAAAAAAAAH8/aSB9JARIx90/s320/brsequindress.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176571156536981762" />

Well, I didn't attend any fabulous party and hence, didn't buy the dress. Well, this weekend I had to return a shirt to BR and I was thumbing through the sale rack when there it was in all its sequined beauty. In my size (not petite though) for $24.97! I was sure it would not fit because it wasn't petite, but it actually fit beautifully. Because it was made to be a mini, it comes right above my knees. Perfect — I'm not really a mini-dress person anyway. And to top it all off, I had a 20 percent off coupon so the final price was $19.97. Wow!!!

I have found some fantastic dresses at BR lately. I visited the petite store in Boston a few weeks back and got this dress:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R9bek0vreOI/AAAAAAAAAHs/CI6JIb1C0IY/s320/br+wrap+dress.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176569545924245730" />

My dress is in black/white, not green. It is so cute. I also got a petite shirt dress in a chain link pattern:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OdBI_2_e3qw/R9bfI0vrePI/AAAAAAAAAH0/0P_SGOc44e8/s320/BR+shirt+dress.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176570164399536370" />

I know this image is small, but it gives you an idea. And it is much cuter on me than on the model! This was a great deal too. It was on sale and missing a few buttons for I got it for super cheap and just resewed the buttons on.

I'm not normally a bargain shopper but I'm having some luck lately. Hope it continues, or comes your way!

Visions of fashion dancing in my head

Hey all. Sorry it has been a week since my last post — the work travel season is heating up, literally. I am heading down to Florida later on this week, and I'm excited about breaking into some spring clothes and open-toed shoes (I'd better schedule that pedicure.) The temperature is supposed to be around 70!

All the websites focus on springs colors such as navy, green, orange and tan — love it! I am heading out tomorrow to see what a few stores hold. There is a Banana Republic Factory Store about 40 minutes from my home and they just started carrying petites. For a casual business event on Saturday, I am envisioning a cream pair of khaki pants, with a navy blue three-quarter sleeve crewneck, a chunky orange necklace and these killer croc-embossed brown wedges from Ralph Lauren (I purchased them today — originally $145, marked down to $15! DSW is having a great sale if you have the patience to look through all the racks.) Hopefully, I can find all the pieces to "make it work" as the lovely Tim Gunn would say.

Being small has its advantages ... sometimes

I was out shopping at Banana Republic today and was bummed out because none of their sale clothes were petite or a regular x-small. But then I found a classic merino wool black turtleneck in XS and the best part was the price: $22.99 and then I had a 20 percent off coupon. Sweet ... It was originally $58.

Then later on in the day I headed over to the Banana Republic Factory Store in search of shoes. I came across a classic pair of black heels in my size (6) but no price on them. They were in the clearance section .... when I got to the register, the associate told me the good news. A $78 pair of heels for $5.19.

Now I think these bargains balance out the expensive jeans, but my friend wasn't buying it. Lifetime (which I normally never watch) says the show "teaches women of all shapes and sizes how to go from self loathing to self loving without resorting to interventions like extreme dieting or cosmetic surgery."

It's a refreshing change. That a show is focusing on making you feel your best as you are, not as fabulous as you possibly may be.

I've struggled with my weight for what feels like my whole life. When you are only five foot tall, five pounds looks like 20, so there really is no wiggle room.

Anyway this show was great it how it made the woman face here insecurities and also her misperceptions about her weight and her body. And Carson Kressley, who was a tad bit snarky on Queer Eye, is adorable here. He limits the sarcasm and seems to actually care about these women. He's great in this show.

So check it out if you find yourself home on a Friday night — the previews show that a petite woman will be featured in an upcoming episode.

My fashion pet peeves

*Pants that are too short. A woman wrote to this columnist asking for help finding petite clothes in a size 8 or 10, and the writer responds with a column that focuses on finding small sizes that do not necessarily come in petite (She does mention in the first paragraph of her response that things need to be altered often if you are petite).

But the assumption that petite means slender is a common misperception. The official definition of petite (courtesy of Dictionary.com) is: a woman, short and having a small, trim figure; diminutive.

These days, with the growth of America's waists, I think petite lines should keep the larger, shorter woman in mind as well as the smaller girls and women out there.

What do you think? I know I overspent, but it has been awhile since I purchased my AG jeans (one year to be exact!). Anyway, they are the Laurel Canyon Petite in the Lagoon wash. The tag says that "in the true spirit of Paige Denim, we continue to provide premium denim for women of all shapes and sizes. This collection offers perfect proportions for the petite. Rather than simply cropping the length, this garment has been rescaled and tailored to accommodate the woman who is 5'4" and under."

I do still need to get these hemmed, but the rest of the proportions are perfect for me. I owned a pair of Paige's before in a regular size and these fit much better. I was also just looking over the Paige Denim web site and they offer a lot of sizes, from tall and petite to sizes 33 and 34 and maternity jeans. That's pretty great that they are focusing their collection to reach women of all different body types and life stages, don't you agree?

Making it easy

I am constantly visiting numerous web sites to find designer jeans in petite sizes. And it was sent super quick.

I also found a 30-inch inseam on a pair of pants from Nike. I don't.)

*J.Crew is offering an additional 20 percent off its sale items. But act quick that offer ends Jan. 1, 2008.

*Victoria's Secret, which has some short-inseam pants, has launched its Semi-Annual Sale online. I picked up a cute string bikini in an espresso color for $10.

*Anthropologie has some super cute petite dresses on sale on its web site. I always forget that they carry petites. It is such cute clothing. I don't really wear anything that is too trendy — you have to throw it out in a season anyway. Because I am a professional I tend to stick with merino wool v-necks and turtlenecks, cashmere, cotton shirts. (I love any button down that has a sheen to it.) But I do love color. I was trapped in the "black is my best friend" mode for a bit too long but this year its about maroons, vibrant blues, purples and deep greens. I am so looking forward to spring because white pants look great with green (see photo.)
I also love dresses — I think they are so easy to wear if you can find the right length. I am on the search for the perfect spring dress — one that is age appropriate (I am 31, not 16 anymore. More on my pet peeves later.)

Anyway, I'm getting off base a bit. Here are my favorite retailers, but as always they are subject to change at a moment's notice.

*Banana Republic. I own almost every piece of Banana's petite line (it's a wonder my husband has stayed with me). The clothes are timeless and beautifully made.
I've noticed over the past year that BR has lengthened the inseam on its petite pants, but that's OK. As a petite you have to love your tailor. Anyway, BR is my mother ship, enough said.

*J.Crew. This is my fall back store. Their clothes tend to be a bit too preppy for my taste but their suits are beautiful. I have my eye on a slate grey one right now with a cute skirt. Two things I hate though: J.Crew's petite line is only available online and you have to order one size up for petites. I know it's only a number but ...

*Jeans. I love jeans. They are my weekend/night wardrobe. Right now I don't have a particular favorite. I have AG jeans in The Club in 3 am and Emerald in the short inseam and they fit great. But over the last year they stopped making the short inseam (a local store owner told me they didn't sell well.) But 7 for all mankind and Paige Premium Denim now have petites/short inseams. I love both of those lines and am desperate for a new pair of each.

*Shoes. Once again, Banana Republic. Love their shoes. I always wear heels because I do like feeling two inches taller, regardless of the fact that I am trying to trick myself. Anyway, their shoes are great and still relatively affordable. I just can't spend $300 of a pair of shoes, no matter how fabulous they are.

*Coach. I know it has become super mainstream (I see 10-year-old girls carrying Coach purses) but I love the look of them. Some are edgy but still classy and others are just classic. I got a few gift certificates for Christmas so I'll be out looking for my next acquisition soon.

All that's fit to mention

Ok, so why did I start this blog today. Well, I really want new workout pants because I am running in a race on Sunday (my new hobby is running, but more on that later.) and I eagerly went to The Sports Authority, Dick's Sporting Goods and Lady Foot Locker today in search of the short inseam exercise pants. Obviously, I have had little luck with my search and that is why I am here typing away my frustrations. I guess I'll have to wear shorts, like I always do, even if the temperature is 20 degrees out.
I know I could have purchased some petite exercise gear from Lucy, J.Crew or Victoria's Secret and have it shipped but I am a creature that seeks out instant gratification. (I know many of you agree with me!) The other thing is that I would have to have them hemmed anyway. I need a 29-inch inseam and you just can't find that in a short inseam. Those are normally around 31-inches. But that is my parent's fault. (Hi guys!)
Anyway, this is my first post and if you find your way to this blog, let me know what you think. Also, if you are also in the shorter range and you know of some great places (my fav is the petite line by Banana Republic) that sell clothes that will fit petites, let me know and I will link to those web sites.
